In his youth, Guy Ligier practiced rowing and then rugby. After WWII, he became a racing driver before founding his own brand in the early 1970s. His models were named JS in tribute to his friend and teammate Jo Schlesser (Jean-Louis's uncle), who died in 1968 during a race on the Circuit de Rouen-les-Essarts. The JS2 is his first production model. It features a fiberglass-reinforced body. The design is by Pietro Frua (known for his work at Pininfarina) and Guy Ligier himself. The Maserati V6 engine is derived from the Citroën SM, as is the gearbox. Other parts come from Citroën and Peugeot models.
